On June 8, 2026, a delegation from the National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences (NILES) at Cairo University, Egypt, visited the College of Chemistry at Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT). The two sides held a cooperation meeting and signed a memorandum of understanding on research cooperation, initiating further collaboration in areas including chemistry, laser science, and functional materials. The meeting was hosted by Han Jingbin, Vice Dean of the College of Chemistry. Professor Jala Elazab, Director of NILES, Professor Wei Min, Dean of the College of Chemistry at BUCT, Professor Xu Suying, and representatives from both institutions attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Professor Wei Min welcomed the delegation from Cairo University on behalf of the College of Chemistry. She introduced the college’s long-standing commitment to fundamental and applied chemical research, as well as its efforts to promote international cooperation. She noted that Cairo University, as one of Egypt’s leading universities, has established strong research strengths in laser technology and interdisciplinary studies through NILES. With complementary research areas and shared interests, the two institutions have broad prospects for future cooperation. Professor Wei expressed the hope that the meeting would provide an opportunity to strengthen communication, promote resource sharing, and facilitate collaborative development.
Professor Jala Elazab and Professor Wei Min subsequently introduced the development, academic programs, research priorities, and talent training systems of NILES and the College of Chemistry at BUCT, respectively. The two sides exchanged views on potential cooperation in areas including frontier research, faculty and student exchanges, and joint research platforms. Through discussions on educational and research experiences, both sides identified areas of common interest and reached preliminary agreements on several cooperative initiatives.

Following the meeting, BUCT and Cairo University held a signing ceremony for the research cooperation memorandum. According to the memorandum, the two institutions will establish a long-term cooperative relationship in several areas, including the establishment of a joint laboratory focusing on biomedical functional materials, joint applications for research projects, organization of academic conferences, publication of research findings, exploration of joint degree programs subject to relevant approvals, academic exchanges between faculty members and students, and joint training of master’s and doctoral students.

The signing of the memorandum represents an important step in strengthening international cooperation at the College of Chemistry. In the future, the college will continue to expand academic exchanges with universities and research institutions in countries along the Belt and Road, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and advance cooperation in joint research and talent development.
