The predecessor of College of Chemistry was the Department of Inorganic Chemical Engineering and the Department of Organic Chemical Engineering, which were established in 1958. The Department of Applied Chemistry was established in 1985 and merged with the Department of Mathematics and Physics to form College of Science in 2000. College of Chemistry was established in 2019. After nearly 40 years of construction and development, it has become the cradle of chemical talent cultivation, scientific research, social services, international exchange and cooperation, cultural inheritance and innovation in China, and has cultivated a large number of high-level chemical and chemical talents with both morality and talent for the country.

The first level discipline of chemistry led by College of Chemistry is a key construction discipline of the national first-class discipline group Green Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials. It entered the top 1 ‰ (121st place) of ESI global rankings for the first time in March 2018 and has steadily increased to 0.243 ‰ (45rd place in January 2024); The first level discipline of Chemical Engineering and Technology, which is a key support for the construction of the college, ranked A (top 5%) in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation and in the top 1% of ESI global ranking. The college takes the lead in building a State Key Laboratory of effective utilization of chemical resources, and has established provincial and ministerial scientific research bases such as the basic research laboratory of assessment and accident identification of new hazardous chemicals, the Beijing key laboratory of analysis of environmental hazardous chemicals, the Beijing Engineering Technology Center of multi-level structural catalytic materials, and national teaching bases such as the chemical teaching base of basic engineering courses, the chemical experiment teaching demonstration center. We have the Beijing International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Supermolecular Intercalation Assembly Materials, the Discipline Innovation Introduction Base 2.0 for Assembly Chemistry of Intercalation Structure Molecular Materials, and the Beijing Science Popularization Base.

The School of Chemistry has a team of discipline leaders with academicians, Changjiang scholars, outstanding young people, national teaching masters, and Four Youth talents as its core, and a strong faculty. By the end of May 2023, there are 154 teaching and administrative staff, including one academician of the CAS Member, one distinguished professor of the Yangtze Scholars Award Program of the Ministry of Education, two distinguished professors of Yangtze Scholars in central and western China, six winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, two national level teachers, one famous teacher of the Ten Thousand Talents Program, one chief scientist of the 973, one person of the National Hundred Thousand Talents Project, three leading talents of scientific and technological innovation of the Ten Thousand Talents Program, three leading talents of national young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation, one national model teacher, one winner of the China Young Female Scientist Award, and one young person of the Yangtze Scholars Award Program of the Ministry of Education. One Changjiang Scholar, five winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, six famous teachers in Beijing, 12 candidates of the New Century Excellent Talents Support Program of the Ministry of Education, and 12 talents of the Beijing New Star Program. We have established one innovation group from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, two Changjiang Scholar Innovation Teams from the Ministry of Education, one first batch of national level teaching teams, and three excellent teaching teams from Beijing.

The School of Chemistry has always adhered to the position of a talent training center, implemented the three comprehensive education talent training method, and created a multi-level and wide-ranging talent training system that integrates undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral studies. Undergraduate enrollment is based on the major category of chemistry, with three majors: chemistry, applied chemistry, and energy chemistry. Applied chemistry has been selected as one of the first batch of first-class undergraduate construction majors in the national Double Ten Thousand Plan. There are doctoral degree programs in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Materials and Chemical Engineering, as well as master's degrees in Materials and Chemical Engineering (formerly Chemical Engineering). Significant teaching achievements, winning 1 first prize and 5 second prizes in national education and teaching achievements; There are 7 national quality courses, 6 national resource sharing courses, and 4 national first-class courses. The quality of student training is excellent, and in the past 5 years, more than 100 national level awards have been won in competitions in chemistry, mathematical modeling, and other disciplines. The employment rate of undergraduate students is over 95%, with a further education rate of 50%; The employment rate for graduate students is over 96%.

The School of Chemistry adheres to the four orientations and takes resource chemistry as its characteristic. It conducts scientific research through upstream and downstream integration, forming five distinctive research directions: intercalation chemistry and effective utilization of salt lake resources, catalytic chemistry and efficient utilization of rare and precious resources, photoelectrochemistry and utilization of renewable resources, nano biochemistry and molecular imaging analysis, and green synthetic chemistry. Significant scientific research achievements have been achieved, with 3 national level scientific and technological awards and more than 10 provincial and ministerial level awards. In the past five years, we have undertaken more than 100 national level scientific research projects, including the National Key R&D Program, National Science and Technology Major Projects, Major Instrument Projects, and National Natural Science Foundation of China. We have received over 140 million yuan in vertical research funding and 110 million yuan in horizontal project funding; Published over 1000 academic papers in mainstream chemical journals both domestically and internationally; Applied for over 700 international and national invention patents, of which over 400 were authorized; Lead the preparation of over 20 industry and group standards. We have established long-term and stable cooperative relationships with leading domestic and foreign enterprises such as Sinopec, PetroChina, CNOOC, Sinochem Group, Western Mining, and Saudi Aramco, and a batch of scientific research achievements have been transformed and applied.

The college adheres to the international exchange strategy of going out and inviting in. Attracting foreign expert Professor Dai Wei (British nationality) to work at the university since 1996 and promoting comprehensive international cooperation with a focus on specific aspects. The research team led by Academician Duan Xue has entered the EU's Sixth Framework Program; Relying on the 111 Innovation Talent Introduction Base and the Beijing International Science and Technology Cooperation Base, we have carried out various forms of substantive cooperation with well-known universities or research institutions in countries and regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France under the principle of equality. Among them, the layered material engineering achievements of the trilateral cooperation between China, Britain, and Thailand have gone abroad with significant results; Emphasis is placed on cultivating a global perspective for graduate students, relying on the four level linkage funding system of the China Scholarship Council (CSC) project, the school's Top 100 Elite Program, the college's special development fund, and bilateral cooperation projects. Excellent graduate students are selected to exchange and study at well-known universities and research institutions abroad, while actively guiding foreign students to further their studies at our university, enhancing the international influence of the college and the discipline of chemistry.
